The men of Babel had striven in their own strength to build a staircase that would reach the heavens, but it was whilst Jacob slept that God showed him a ladder that linked heaven to earth.
It was truly a divine appointment! Years before on this very mountain his father Isaac had laid down on an altar to be sacrificed by his grandfather. But God had intervened by providing the sacrifice and had promised Abraham that through his offspring all the nations of the earth would be blessed.
This time God’s promise to Jacob was more specific. God was giving Jacob and his descendants the land that he was lying on. He would remain with them, but scatter them abroad. He would then bring them back to their land and bless the world through them.
Jacob named the place Bethel, or God’s house. It became the site of the temple in Jerusalem that Yeshua* called “my Father’s house”. And it is today the most contested piece of ground in the whole world.
Since then God has kept His promise and brought His people back to the land. And when Yeshua returns to Jerusalem, the nations will also gather there to worship Him.
And then Jacob’s dream will come to pass because “all men will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man”.
* Yeshua is the Hebrew name of Jesus.
